Abstract:Rare earths with excellent physicochemical properties have been used for preparing powder metallurgy
(PM) structural materials. The research status of rare earths in strengthening mechanical properties of PM structural
materials associated with the underlying mechanism was summarized. The results indicate that rare earths can im‐
prove matrix purifying, grain refining and dispersion strengthening, which are attributed to its excellent chemical
activity, thermal stability and mechanical properties. Nevertheless, the mechanical properties will be deteriorated
by some defects identified as agglomeration and segregation with incorporating excessive induced rare earths.
Moreover, potential research directions of rare earths in preparing PM structural materials are prospected.
