Abstract Using ball mill powder as raw material, Al, Al-2.5%TiO2, Al-2.5%TiO2-2%Gr, Al-2.5%TiO2-4%Gr and
other pure aluminum and aluminum-based composite materials were prepared by powder metallurgy method. The
densification and deformation properties of sintered Al-TiO2-Gr composites during cold heading were investigated.
The powder preforms were pressed with a 40 kN hydraulic press with appropriate punches and dies, keeping the
initial theoretical density at 85%, and then sintered in an electric furnace at 590 ℃ for 3 h in an air atmosphere. The
sintered preforms were subjected to incremental compressive loads of 10 kN until cracks were found on the free
surface. Axial stress (σz), hoop stress (σθ), mean stress (σm)and effective stress (σeff)were calculated for all preforms,
which are related to the axial strain (εz).The densification behavior of the composites under axial strain (εz)
and transverse strain was investigated. Compared with other composite material preforms, pure aluminum preforms
have better densification and deformation properties.Adding TiO2 to pure Al and Gr reinforcements can improve
the strength of Al-TiO2 composites.
