Abstract To improve the service life of friction materials, sintered- powder materials are replacing resin- based
ones in the fields of traffic tools and industry machines. However, the problem of brake noise occurred occasionally
limits the material’s widespread application due to the mode-coupling of a brake system. In this paper, a powder
metallurgy brake pad applied in a heavy-duty mining truck is modeled and analyzed by using the finite element
software of Abaqus. The first eight orders of natural frequencies and mode shapes are computed and verified by
hammering experiment. The constrained modes of the brake pad vary a lot from the free-free modes in the natural
frequencies as well as in the mode shapes. Then the influence factors on the constraint modal characteristics of the
brake pad are analyzed from the aspects of the Young’s modulus, thickness and slot number of the friction block
and the thickness of the back plate, which is helpful for designing powder metallurgy brake pads with low-noise
properties.
