Abstract When sintered stainless steel fiber felts is used in the field of filtration, the filtrate medium usually contains
highly corrosive Cl-, causes the fiber skeleton to be corroded and fractured, thus reducing its filtration performance.
HCl solution was used as corrosion medium in this paper. The effects of the concentration of corrosion medium,
fiber diameter and porosity on the tensile properties of sintered stainless steel fiber felts after corrosion in the
HCl solution were obtained. The results shows when the concentration of HCl solution is 1%, the tensile strength
of sintered felt does not change before and after corrosion; when the concentration of HCl solution increased to
10%, the tensile strength of sintered felt only decreased 1.8 MPa; after corrosion with 10% HCl solution, the tensile
strength of sintered felt decreases by 2.59 MPa when fiber diameter is 8 μm, and the tensile strength of sintered
felt is only decrease 0.19 MPa when fiber diameter is 28 μm. After corrosion with 10% HCl solution, the decrease
of tensile strength is 4.22 MPa when the porosity of sintered felt is 75%, and the decrease of tensile strength is only
0.88 MPa when the porosity increased to 95%. Thus, sintered stainless steel fiber felts is still the preferred filter material
for the filtration environment with Cl- concentration less than 10%. On the premise of meeting the filtration
accuracy, the sintered felts should be prepared by coarse fiber with the diameter of 20 ~ 28 μm and the porosity of
80% ~ 85%.
