Abstract The development and utilization of nuclear shielded materials has been going on for more than 80 years.
Based on the demand for nuclear shielding materials, the research and application status of three commonly nuclear
shielding materials was introduced, including boron-containing stainless steel, resin matrix composites and alumi‐
num matrix composites. The characteristics, the advantages and disadvantages of their application were evaluated
respectively. On this basis, it is pointed out that with structural and functional properties combined aluminum ma‐
trix composite shielding materials containing boron and tungsten elements are the development trend of nuclear
shielding materials. It can be predicted that the boron, tungsten and aluminum composite shielding materials will
occupy a place in the composite shielding market in the future.
