Abstract By macroscopic examination, physical and chemical analysis and residual stress test, the cracking
causes of diamond roller prepared by impregnation sintering was analyzed and studied. The results show that dur‐
ing the manufacturing process of large-diameter diamond roller, the vacancy of WC powder is easy to form in the
fusion area due to the difference of thermal expansion between steel matrix and impregnated sintering layer, result‐
ing in the decline of mechanical properties in this area. In addition, the residual stress in the fusion zone of largediameter diamond roller is significantly greater than that of small-diameter diamond roller, and tempering heat
treatment could effectively reduced the residual stress of large-diameter diamond roller. When the small-diameter
diamond roller is prepared by impregnation sintering, fusion zone is hard to form the vacancy of WC powder, and
the welding residual stress is also low, thus the possibility of cracking is low.
