Research progress and development tendency of mechanical properties of sintered Nd- Fe- B magnets

Abstract:Sintered Nd- Fe- B magnets are widely used in many fields due to its excellent property- price ratio. However, sintered Nd- Fe- B magnets are rather brittle, and they are prone to be lack of the corner or edge, even to be broken. The mechanical property is a very important index of the comprehensive performance of the magnets. The mechanical properties and the machinability of index performance sintered Nd- Fe- B magnets directly influence their service reliability and the production cost. The magnetic functional devices are developing to the miniaturization, lightweight, high functionality and high accuracy directions, such as the motors applied in intelligent mobile phones, and so on. The dimension needed is very thin and small for dimensionsome machined magnet products, in which the good machinability is required, and the degradation of the magnetic properties often happened in the thin and small products. The failure of brittle materials is usually caused by a dynamic load. In some applications such as military, aviation, and space fields, the high anti- overload performance and impact stability are demanded. For electric vehicle drive motors in which high rpm and small air gaps are necessary, sintered Nd- Fe- B magnets need to be used as a structural element. The mechanical properties and fracture mechanism of sintered Nd- Fe- B magnets have been summarized; the influences of doped elements on mechanical properties of the magnets, have been discussed; the research results on strengthening, toughening, and impact resistance of sintered Nd- Fe- B magnets were introduced; the characterization method of machinability for the Nd- Fe- B magnets were proposed. The research and development trends of the mechanical properties of sintered Nd- Fe- B magnets were pointed out in the future.
