Abstract:With the development of nuclear energy, shielding materials are required to be stable at high temperatures and under irradiation. Zirconium hydride is regarded as an advanced shielding material for fast neutrons due to the high hydrogen capacity, the high decomposition temperature and the mild irradiation damage. However, it is difficult to fabricate the large-scale bulk of zirconium hydride. Here the reaction between zirconium hydride and the metal base is studied. Through powder metallurgy methods, dense shielding materials are produced, which exhibit good performance in the shielding of fast neutrons, thermal neutrons and γ rays. Zirconium hydride in the shielding material keeps stable up to 600oC. Our material can be potentially applied for the shielding of nuclear radiation at elevated temperatures.
