Electrodeposition and Mechanism of Nanocrystalline Fe-Ni-Cr Alloy Foil

Abstract:Fe-Ni-Cr alloy foils were electrodeposited from trivalent chromium ion bath containing composite carboxylic acids as complexing agent. The effects of concentration of trivalent chromic salt, electrodeposition current density and mode of power supply on composition of alloy foil and foil-formability were investigated. The Fe-Ni-Cr alloy foil was characterized by means of SEM, EDS and XRD. The properties of alloy foil and the mechanism of alloy electrodeposition were also studied. An alloy foil is prepared by pulse electrodeposition in composite carboxylic acids system which contains 5%~8% (mass fraction) Cr. The microstructure results indicate the alloy foil piled up compactly with sphericity and its grain size is less than 10 nm; and the main phases are the α-Fe or γ-Fe interstitial solid solution with Cr. The more the content of Cr in alloy foil is, the more the electrical resistance, micro-hardness and anti-corrosion resistance of alloy foil are. Furthermore, the rate controlled step of alloy electrodeposition is charge transfer process. When trivalent chromium ion is added in electrolyte, the velocity lowers while the deposition resistance increases.
