Synthesis of nano-CeO2 hollow sphere and its application in dye wastewater treatment

Abstract:Using Ce(NO3)3·6H2O as Ce source and Na2O2 as oxidant, nano-CeO2 powder was prepared by hydrothermal method. The phase composition and microstructure of the samples were analyzed by XRD and SEM. The results show that with the increase of hydrothermal reaction temperature, the microstructure of CeO2 gradually changes from rod-shaped and small particle structure to hollow sphere, with more uniform and gradually growing particle size, consisting of many small nano-sized particles. The photodegradation rate of CeO2 powder prepared at 120 ℃ for 12 h is about 76.9%, while the powder prepared at 180 ℃ for 12 h has the photodegradation rate of 85.7%, indicating that nano-CeO2 hollow spheres prepared by hydrothermal method have strong adsorption capacity for methylene blue, and powders prepared at higher temperature (180 ℃) have stronger adsorption capacity due to more perfect hollow sphere structure and more uniform particle size.
