Abstract:30% SiCp/2024Al composites was prepared by vacuum hot-pressing sintering, and a dynamic compression
experiment was performed using a Split Hopkinson Pressure Bar (SHPB) to obtain a dynamic stress with a
strain rate of 1 600-3 800 s-1 strain curve. The results show that the trend of stress-strain curve of 30%SiCp/2024Al
composites material does not change much under different strain rates when subjected to dynamic load in a certain
range of high strain rates, which is basically rate- insensitive material. The specimens don’t show macroscopic
shear failure under dynamic impact. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) is used to characterize the microstructure
of the compressed specimens. Damages such as holes and microcracks appeare inside the specimens, and
debonding of reinforcement particles occurre at the specimen boundaries. The material shows good plastic toughness.
This paper also discusseses the fundamentals of compressive deformation under dynamic loading.
