Abstract The research situation of discontinuously reinforced metal matrix composites was discussed. Several kinds of preparation technology for discontinuous phase hybrid reinforced metal matrix composites were briefly introduced, including mixing casting, pressure casting, pressureless infiltration, spray deposition, powder metallurgy method, in situ reaction method, etc. Three common hybrid types were discussed, including particle and particle, short fiber and whisker (short fiber), particle and whisker (short fiber). Properties and present research situation of those three types were reviewed. The existed problems of discontinuous phase hybrid reinforced metal matrix composites were proposed, and the future development was also forecasted.
