Abstract In this paper, the effect of laser direct manufacturing (LDM) on the structure and mechanical properties of 17-4PH samples in different atmosphere was studied. The results show that the deposited and heat-treated samples have higher tensile strength and hardness due to the increase of oxygen and nitrogen content in the atmosphere. Under the condition of argon chamber, the temperature of heat accumulation of substrate is higher, the porosity of sample decreases significantly, and the formation of reversed austenite results in the decrease of sample strength.
