Abstract Using the excellent high thermal conductivity of graphene, graphene nano-powder was added into deionized water to prepare nano-fluid by a two-step process. The stability and thermal conductivity were tested and compared with deionized water. A solar energy heat collection system test bed was set up. Under the same solar radiation, graphene nano-fluids and deionized water were used as working medium for experimental comparison. The results show that the thermal conductivity of nano-fluid added with graphene nano-powder is significantly higher than that of deionized water. The temperature difference between the inlet and outlet of the collector using nano-fluids with 0.1%, 0.2% and 0.3% grapheme (mass percent) as the base liquid is increased by 9.2%, 16.9% and 12.8% respectively compared with that using deionized water as the base liquid. The nano-fluid with 0.2% grapheme (mass percent) is used as the working medium of the heat collection system, the water temperature is 13.2% higher than that of the deionized water as working medium, and the heat exchange rate is increased by 30.5%.
