Abstract In this paper, the plasma nitriding process was carried out to treat the surface of H13 hot die steel. The experimental results show that the samples with the best property are achieved when the nitriding temperature is 500 ℃ and the holding time is 8 h,while the surface hardness is 1 250HV and nitriding layer thickness is 241 μm. The friction and wear test show that the wear loss quality of die steel samples with nitriding temperature of 500 ℃ and holding time of 8 h is 206 mg after 14 h of wearing test. The phase composition shows that the main compounds in nitriding layer are Fe2N,Fe4N and Fe3O4.The compound layer and nitriding layer with appropriate thickness have significant effect on the improvement of thermal properties of die steel.
