Abstract Using CBN, Al, and Co as experimental materials, PCBN (Polycrystalline Cubic Boron Nitride) cutting
tool materials were synthesized on a six-sided press under high temperature and vacuum treatment. The effect of
the Al-Co mass ratio in the PCBN binder on the synthesis and related properties of PCBN cutting tool materials
was studied in order to obtain high-performance PCBN cutting tool materials. Through analysis of the phase com‐
position, microhardness, density, microstructure, and cutting performance of PCBN, it was found that the hardness
and wear ratio of the sample were highest at an Al-Co content of 8%, measuring 35.72 GPa and 7,560, respectively.
At an Al-Co content of 10%, the PCBN cutting tool material exhibited the best relative density and mechanical
strength, measuring 99.2% and 882.5 MPa, respectively. Additionally, the cutting performance of the samples was
relatively good at an Al-Co content of 8% and 6%. Overall, a PCBN cutting tool material with optimal comprehen‐
sive performance can be obtained when the Al-Co content is 8%.
