Abstract The compressive properties of aluminum foam with small pore size at low strain rate were studied by using 6061 aluminum alloy powder as raw material and TiH2 powder as foaming agent. The results show that the pore size of aluminum foam prepared by powder metallurgy method is small and the pore structure is uniform. With the increase of compression pressure， aluminum foam undergoes three stages： elastic deformation， collapse deformation and densification. The static compressive stress-strain curve of aluminum foam is arc-shaped. With the increase of strain， the stress of aluminum foam with different porosity shows the same trend. The energy absorption capacity of aluminum foam is directly proportional to the strain and inversely proportional to the porosity. However， the energy absorption efficiency is proportional to the porosity， and increases at first and then decreases with the increase of the strain.
