Abstract The microstructure and mechanical properties of SiC particle reinforced Mg-9Al-1Si composite were studied. The results show that the composite matrix consists of α-Mg, β-Mg17Al12 and Mg2Si. SiC particles are grayish white and spherical, regular in shape and evenly distributed. After SiC particles are added, the average grain size of the composite matrix decreases from 166 μm to 118 μm. The tensile strength, yield strength and elongation of Mg-9Al-1Si composites reinforced by SiC particles are better than those of Mg-9Al-1Si composites without SiC particles at room temperature, increasing 37.6%, 58.8% and 56.5% respectively. After SiC particles are added, many elongated tearing edges appear in the tensile fracture morphology of the composite, dimples and a small number of cleavage steps also appear in some areas.
