Abstract [Al-xMg-12Sn]alloy powder was prepared by mechanical alloying method, and then the powder was pressed and sintered. The effect of Mg addition on microstructure and friction properties of Al-12Sn alloy was studied by X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy. The results show that the addition of Mg makes Sn finer and distribute evenly on the Al matrix. At the same time, Mg destroys the oxide film on the surface of Al particles and increases the sintering activity of Al-12Sn alloy powder. The wear resistance of Al-12Sn alloy powder is significantly improved by adding an appropriate amount of Mg. The alloy has the best mechanical properties and wear resistance when the mass percent of Mg is 0.8%.
