Abstract Using Cr-Fe hard particles with various carbon contents as friction components, copper-based powder metallurgy friction materials were prepared by powder metallurgy process. The influence of Cr-Fe type on its friction and wear properties was studied. The results show that when the friction velocity increases from 3 000 r/min to 7 000 r/min, the friction coefficients of the four samples increase firstly and then decrease. The friction coefficient of friction material with micro-carbon Cr-Fe as friction component decays severely at high speed, while the friction material with high carbon Cr-Fe as friction component has a stable friction coefficient and little fluctuation during the whole friction process. The wear loss of the four samples increases with the increasing friction velocity. The wear loss of the samples added with micro-carbon Cr-Fe increases sharply under high-speed friction, and the wear resistance is the worst. However, the samples added with high carbon Cr-Fe have the least wear loss and the best wear resistance.
