Abstract The SiCp/Al composites were prepared by high-pressure torsion (HPT) at room temperature with pure Al and SiC powders as raw material. The surface micro-hardness of the samples was measured, the hardness—radius curves were drawn, and hardness distribution of the samples were analyzed. The results show that the surface hardness of SiCp/Al composites with different process parameters increases along the radial direction because of the influence of HTP strains. The edge hardness is affected by flash greatly. The micro hardness of samples with single size SiC particles can be improved by increasing loading pressure, turns or the volume fraction of SiC particles. Double size SiC particles with optimum size ratio or volume ratio are more useful to the increasing of hardness. The hardness of SiCp/Al composites is higher and hardness distribution is more uniform when the size ratio or volume ratio of double size SiC particles is optimized.
