Abstract:The effects of Sc on the properties of filler metals have been investigated. By changing the level of Sc, the filler metals’ melting point, microstructure, spreading behavior and their shear strength of the brazed joints have been tested and measured. The results show that with the addition of Sc in Al-8. 5Si-20Cu-10Ge brazing filler metal, the microstructure is improved significantly, the melting temperature almost remain the same, the spread ability and the mechanical property of the brazed joint are improved. When the Sc content is up to 0. 3%, the filler metal shows the best spread ability. If continue to increase the Sc content, the spreading area will be reduced. Compared with the joints without the Sc element, the joint strength could be up to 71. 78 MPa which is increased by 28. 64% when the content of Sc is 0. 1%.
