Abstract:The microstructure characteristics, metallurgical defects and optimization processes of additive manu‐
facturing aluminum-magnesium(Al-Mg) alloys were reviewed, and the development of additive manufacturing
Al-Mg alloys was prospected. As for the additive manufacturing Al-Mg alloys by aging treatment, the micro‐
structure of which exhibited bimodal grain distribution that columnar and equiaxed grains alternated, which was
mainly related to the precipitation of the primary dispersed phase at the molten pool boundary. Al-Mg alloys
were prone to form solidification cracks and pores during the additive manufacturing process . The crack initia‐
tion of Al-Mg alloys was mainly related to their wide solidification temperature range, and the tendency of
which could be reduced by refining grains. the formation mechanism of pores was relatively complex, which
was possibly connected with the excess of laser energy and volatilization of Mg, and some pores could be elimi‐
nated by hot isostatic pressing(HIP). In the future, The improvement of mechanical properties at high tempera‐
ture and the breakthrough of Airbus' patent monopoly of Al-Mg might count for something.
