Abstract Double layer iron-based composite material with dense matrix and porous oil-bearing surface was prepared by powder metallurgy method. The friction and wear properties were investigated on an HDM-20 tribo-tester. The results show that when the porosity of surface is about 23%, the sample has long stable operation time, good friction-reducing and wear-resistance performance. Compared with single layer sample with similar porosity, the multi-layer samples have obvious improvement on anti-friction and wear resistance performance, as well the bearing capacity.
