Abstract The 35%SiC/2024Al (mass percent) composite was prepared by cold pressing and sintering, and then the specimen was hot-extruded. The microstructure of the material was observed by optical microscope and TEM, the physical and mechanical properties were also tested. The distribution characteristic of SiC particles, change of grains in matrix and the strengthening mechanism of the composite were investigated. The results show that the distribution of SiC particles is more uniform and the segregation decreases after hot-extrusion. The arrangement of SiC particles in the direction of extrusion is more oriental and orderly. The grains of the composite are refined. The densities and tensile strength are increased significantly after hot-extrusion.
