Abstract:Multiscale simulations using the quasicontinuum (QC) method were performed to explain the process of nanoindentation on Al bi- crystal. The macroscopic load versus indentation depth curves, as well as microscopic representations, such as atomic location maps and plots of strain distribution were obtained, with different upper film thickness. The abrupt drops of load are caused by the nucleation of dislocations or the extension stacking faults, and strain concentration at grain boundary due to lattice distortion. When the upper layer film is thin, dislocation is more likely to emit at the grain boundary, which leads to a lower yield point.
